The reason for this is that the first stop you have in the US, you must go through US immigration, which is a very lengthy process, especially since 9/11. And you will thus most likely miss your connecting flight, making for a very stressful trip. It’s no big deal if you stop-over in the US, just make sure you’ve left at least two even three hours to connect your flights.
